The Advanced Diploma of Fashion Design and Merchandising course provides a maximum of creative, technical and business training for those who wish to have careers in a variety of roles within the fashion industry.


This qualification is intended for design and product development roles in the fashion industry, as well as roles associated with managing fashion business as part of an enterprise. Skills include design and product development, as well as technical production skills and business.


The Advanced Diploma applies to management of textile, clothing and footwear (TCF) operations that requires knowledge of fashion design and technical production processes, the use of emerging technologies and TCF merchandising techniques that may be applied at various stages of the supply chain.

This comprehensive course is designed to give students a complete range of practical skills and knowledge in design, production and business. The focus will be on designing a collection of garments for a fashion parade. The course focuses on a broad range of topics that align to most areas of the fashion industry.


To be awarded the MST60116 Advanced Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Technology, competency must be achieved in forty-five (45) units of competency and consist of:

  • Ten (10) core units of competency
  • Thirty-five (35) elective units of competency.


This qualification focuses on advanced design processes, production and costings, computer aided design and fashion business.

Assessment requires competence in units that align to all assignments, set tasks and projects. In order to develop the knowledge and skills to successfully complete the course, students are required to be punctual and encouraged to attend all classes.

  • Approximately $1000+ (cost will vary depending on quality of accessories and quantity of fabrics purchased)
  • Current edition of Adobe Creative Suite software package or access to Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Personal Laptop required (maximum two years old)
  • Student Technical Workbooks:
    • Pattern Engineering for Apparel – $66 Purchased from MFI
    • Couture and Advanced Couture Techniques $77 purchased at MFI
  • Detailed equipment lists received at enrolment


  • Twelve months with MFI pre-requisites
  • Four days per week of face-to-face delivery/assessment
  • Eighteen hours per week of self-directed learning
